24 hours to go until game night and the debut of our new player who is on his way right now!  He’ll be joining up with his new teammates and aiming to make an immediate impact.  This weekend we have all the usual Supporters Club fund-raising with some great prizes on offer so look out for the wonderful sellers in their tabards around the rink.

Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning will be looking to continue where they left off last weekend with a second consecutive victory at Planet Ice on Saturday.

However the task could hardly be harder as National Ice Hockey League leaders Telford Tigers come to the city for the penultimate time in the regular season. Lightning know that Tigers are beatable – on the last two meetings they have come out on top by 5-2 and 6-3 margins so there is all to play for.

Head coach Lewis Clifford has been working hard this week on his options following the ankle injury to key import Robin Kovar who has struck up a great partnership with Liam Stewart since his arrival in early December.

Kovar’s absence will certainly be a blow as will the loss of defenceman James Griffin for at least a few games following the leg injury he sustained in last Sunday’s game against Raiders.

But Telford have not been without their own injury problems – the club put out a release early this week about veteran Great Britain defenceman Jonathan Weaver who has not played since October due to a head injury. He return is not expected to be imminent.

Top scoring honours for Tigers at present go to Dunfermline born much travelled Scott McKenzie who has amassed 57 points – 25 goals and 37 assists from 35 outings this term. He is closely followed by Czech Dominik Florian with 54 points – scoring the same number of goals as the Scot but with three fewer assists.

Meanwhile Brandon Whistle who holds dual British-Canadian nationality has proved to be something of a revelation since he joined Tigers in October from Sheffield Steelers in October. With 42 points to his credit from 27 games he comes from a hockey family – his dad, Dave, played for Telford, Basingstoke Beavers and Bracknell Bees in the ’90s before going on to coach Bees and Belfast Giants among other clubs.
