The international contingent of the Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning roster for 2018-19 has expanded again with the signing of Georgs Golovkovs. The 22 year old, 6’ 0” centreman signs for MKL from Liepaja in the top tier of Latvian hockey.
A native of the Latvian capital Riga, Georgs brings to Milton Keynes experience of not just a season in the KHL but also the highly-rated Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and has also represented his country at U18, U20 and senior levels.
Georgs was equal top points scorer for Latvia U18’s in two consecutive World Junior Championships, then was a member of the U20 roster which won silver medals in the 2013-14 season.
His abilities at international junior level saw him earn a contract in the QMJHL, signing on for Drummondville Voltigeurs at the age of 18 – ranking in the team’s top 5 point scorers for both of his seasons there. Subsequently he moved to Waterloo Blackhawks, helping the team to a third place finish in the US Hockey League, but missed part of the season due to injury.
The following season saw a return to his home country, and a new challenge with Dinamo Riga in the KHL – the team where his father, double U20 Latvian gold medal winner Vladimir, played for five seasons. The 2017-18 campaign saw Georgs move to Liepaja – and now this promising young prospect will experience his first taste of the British game, with Coach Doug McKay at MK Lightning.
”I am really excited to join MK Lightning. Thanks to Doug Mckay and the MKL organisation for this opportunity. I am very much looking forward to coming to the UK and especially having the chance to play infront of the MK fans. I have heard the atmosphere makes MK a place to fear, so I am ready for the challenge ahead.”
Coach McKay commented,
“Georgs is young but shows immense promise. I believe he is ready to make a mark on the game, and I’m delighted to be able to give him this opportunity here in the UK. I know he will work hard to prove a point and I hope the Lightning fans will give him all their support and encouragement.”
