The Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning continue their signing schedule with the announcement that Canadian netminder Patrick Killeen has signed for the team’s second top flight campaign.
The 28 year old Ontario native featured in the 2008 NHL Draft when he was selected in round six by Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins assigned Patrick to their AHL affiliate team, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, to continue his development.
After beginning his hockey career close to home in Ottawa at the age of five, he progressed to the city’s Junior Senators organisation at 15 years old then the Brampton Battalion, where his ability saw him make the 2008 draft.
He subsequently spent two seasons with Wheeling Nailers – the Penguins’ ECHL affiliate side.  In the 2012-13 season he was traded to Orlando Solar Bears, precursor to a season-long break from the sport to focus solely on his education.
Killeen returned to action in 2014 with a two season stint for Carleton University – allowing him to combine hockey with his studies.  Whilst there he became CIS Top Goaltender and was chosen for the CIS First All Star Team.
In 2016 he moved to Italy where his services were secured by Ritten, the then Serie A champions.  In both seasons with Ritten, the club became Italian league champions.
His fellow alumni from his formative years playing in Canada rank him with impressive company;  at Wheeling Nailers he played alongside current Cardiff Devils stars Andrew Lord, Andrew Hotham and Paul Crowder, whilst at Brampton his team mates included Guildford Flames’ Ian Watters and current NHL Ottawa Senators’ alternate captain, Matt Duchene.
Now, Patrick will bring his skills to the British game, for Milton Keynes Lightning.
Lightning’s Head Coach Doug McKay said he was excited about bringing Patrick Killeen to Milton Keynes.
“He’s had a great hockey education in Canada and developed his game further with some amazing experience at the top level in Italy.
“He’s calm with great reactions, and his physical stature will make him imposing in goal. I think he’ll do a great job for us here and I’m looking forward to seeing him in action!”
