The defensive force of the Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning have been strengthened with the addition of 24 year old Canadian Nelson Armstrong.

Hailing from Peterborough, Ontario, the 6’ 1”, 205lbs blue liner makes the switch from Florida Everblades in the ECHL. Last season the Everblades – affiliates of the NHL Carolina Hurricanes – topped the Southern Division of the ECHL Eastern Conference, by a clear eight point margin.

Last season Nelson helped the Everblades to win the ECHL Brabham Cup. He moved to the ‘sunshine state’ after three seasons at the University of Prince Edward Island.  In his second season there, he registered the most points of any defenceman on the team thanks to 5 goals and 15 assists and in his final season, the second highest.

Following two seasons of collegiate hockey with St Lawrence University he progressed to the OHL with Peterborough Pete’s – the team which recently signed up young British player, Liam Kirk following his drafting by the NHL Arizona Coyotes.

Acknowledging that many hockey careers are relatively short, the Canadian then prioritised his education at the University of Prince Edward Island, studying for a Batchelor of Business Administration qualification whilst representing the university hockey team.

The 2018-19 season will be Nelson’s first taste of the game outside of North America and MKL Head Coach Doug McKay is looking forward to seeing what he can do.  “I heard good reports about Nelson when I heard he was available.  He has a level head on his shoulders and offensive ability as well as defensive.  This is going to be a tough and physical league this season but I’m confident he can handle whatever is thrown at him.”

Nelson Armstrong’s warm up, home and away jerseys will be available on our Own and Loan Scheme as soon as this news is announced publicly.  The scheme sees your name on the back of his jersey for the season.  The match-worn jersey is then presented to you by the player at the end of the 2018-19 season, a unique memento of your favourite player’s performances in the Elite League!  For full details and to apply, email
