Match preview
Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning have just one game this weekend and it will prove a tough test for Lewis Clifford’s men as old rivals Peterborough Phantoms make their first visit of the season to Planet Ice on Saturday. Peterborough beat Lightning 4-0 at Bretton in October so MK will be out to even up the scores and put last weekend’s disappointments behind them.
MK should see the return of Grant McPherson and Russ Cowley who have both trained well this week after lengthy layoffs, as well as Jordan Lawday who returned to the ice in training this week and looked sharp. Still out is Brandon Stones. Liam Stewart will be hoping to continue his streak of scoring in each of his MKL appearances so far. Last week saw MK out shoot their opponents in both games and they will be looking to capitalise on more of those chances in tomorrow’s game.
Phantoms are up there with the leading pack in the National Ice Hockey League – last Saturday they went down to Hull Pirates 6-4 but bounced back to see off Swindon Wildcats 6-3 the next day. That result, combined with Telford Tigers’ win over Lightning, saw the Shropshire club knock the Wiltshire outfit off the top of the table.
Three overseas born players lead Phantoms’ offensive threat. Czech Petr Stepanek who is on his third tour of duty with the club is currently top scorer with 27 points – 14 goals and 13 assists from 18 games while Latvian born Martins Susters is second on the same number of points but registering 12 goals and 15 assists. Susters qualifies as a non-import due to his junior career being in this country. Third is Czech Ales Padelek who is in his fifth season with the Cambridgeshire side is keeping the top two on their toes with 26 points (13 goals and 13 assists).
Peterborough born James Ferrara has been with Phantoms for a decade or so and is still reliable for few goals – he has seven so far as well as 14 assists for 21 points, making him the fourth highest Phantoms scorer.
Former Lightning player Glenn Billing’s career has blossomed at Phantoms. After finishing third highest scorer last year with 57 points he has accumulated 20 points thus far for fifth spot – nine goals and 11 assists.
In between the pipes for Phantoms is likely to be Jordan Marr who saw service with MK in the 2015-2016 when the other netminder was a certain Dean Skinns. Marr has a save average of more than 91 per cent this year.
Face off on Saturday is at a 7pm. Tickets can be obtained in advance by contacting Planet Ice on 01908 540020 and online here.
