“When you are putting your team together you need to tick a lot of boxes. You need so many players who can play on the PK, so many who can play on the PP, so many who can be on the ice in the final minute of a 1 goal game. When you get a player who has all of those attributes you have to keep hold of them as they are a huge asset to the team.” This is what MKL Head Coach Lewis Clifford had to say about capturing the signature of your MKL Captain Russ Cowley, who returns to the club for another year.
38 year old Russ was born in Edmonton, Canada, and brings with him experience of pretty much everything. He’s played at Elite Level with Coventry Blaze and Cardiff Devils, and has made tens of appearances for Great Britain as a senior international. In the 2019/20 season Russ made 34 appearances picking up 53 points.
Cliff told us some more about having Russ back in the side: “Cowls has experience that dates back before some of his teammates were born, he’s operated at the highest level for years and has a trophy cabinet that anyone in British Ice Hockey would be proud of.”
And it’s Cowls’ experience combined with some of our new arrivals which gives the balance to the team Cliff is hoping to build: “Whilst we are looking to make the team younger and evolve it for the future, there is literally no one better to be a part of that and show the young guys what it takes to perform like a pro night in night out. Cowls keeps himself in exceptional shape, he takes care of every detail of the game that we need him to and he leads by example every night, players like this don’t come round very often, we are lucky to have him and the young players on the team are lucky to have him as an example to look up to.
Please welcome back – your Captain Russell Cowley. He will wear the number 17 shirt. The own and loan will roll over from the 2020/21 holders – Dave Bunyan will be in touch soon!
We have two other ways you can support Russ and the club too! You can become Russ’s sponsor with your name or company name read out every time Russ is mentioned. Get the details here.
