With a heavy heart, we announce Sam Russell’s decision to step away from active play in the sport of hockey due to an injury. The 23-year-old Milton Keynes Lightning player, who has been a key talent on the ice, is taking some time away following a challenging period of rehabilitation.
Born on August 10, 2000, Sam embarked on his hockey journey in his hometown of Milton Keynes, where he developed into an exciting prospect. Standing at 180 cm (5’11”) and weighing 82 kg (181 lbs), Russell’s physicality, skill, and skating made him a force to be reckoned with.
Throughout his career, Sam showcased his potential with stints at various programs, including the Okanagan Hockey Academy UK and the Ontario Hockey Academy. His international debut for Great Britain in the U18 category earned him recognition for his defensive prowess. He later went on to become the assistant captain of the GB U20s, demonstrating his leadership on the international stage.
In the 2018-19 season, Sam ventured to the United States to join the New England Wolves in the EHL, continuing to impress with his tenacity and skill. His return to the Milton Keynes Lightning for the 2019-20 season was met with excitement from fans, and he didn’t disappoint, contributing nine points to the team. During the 2021-22 season, he broke through into the Elite League, making 17 appearances for Coventry Blaze and scoring 2 points.
However, the turning point in Sam’s career occurred during the 2022/23 season when recovery from surgery sidelined him for the entire year. Despite relentless efforts and a gruelling rehabilitation process, he was unable to make a full recovery. This setback has led to his decision to take some time away from playing hockey, prioritising his long-term health and quality of life.
Commenting on Sam’s decision, MK Lightning Head Coach Tim Wallace said: “I want to wish Sammy all the best in his future endeavours. He is a great person with incredible work ethic and character. It was not easy for him to come to this decision, but his body is just not willing at this point. I still believe in Sammy in whatever he does, and he will always be a part of the MK Family.”
For the next year, Sam will be taking up a position as an assistant coach for a AAA junior team in Canada, where his knowledge and passion for the game will undoubtedly make a positive impact on aspiring young players.
Lightning Director Tom Roberts added: “This is a sombre moment as we acknowledge Sam’s departure from playing the game he loves. Over the past 16 months, we have worked closely with him to provide support for his treatment and rehabilitation. We were eagerly anticipating his return to the ice, initially with the Thunder, and eventually with the Lightning. Unfortunately, fate had other plans, and a setback during early-season training proved to be the final hurdle.
Sam is taking a long-term perspective on his life and future, and we wholeheartedly support him in this broader vision. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to him for being an outstanding individual, a committed professional, and a highly skilled player whom we will dearly miss. Take care, Sam.”
