Russell recruits former GB junior Forbes

Hard work during his time with Great Britain U18s and U20s has paid off for Scots-born forward Alex Forbes, announced as the penultimate addition to the Smith Recycling MK Lightning roster.

Alex – who recently celebrated his 21st birthday – got his first taste for hockey with Elgin Ice Hockey Club near his hometown, Mosstowie. Aged just 14 he moved to Ontario, Canada with his family, where he further developed his skills in a local hockey academy where he began to rise through the ranks.

In the 2013-14 season his efforts were recognised with selection for Great Britain U18’s – alongside Lewis Hook, Glenn Billing and Jordan Hedley – making five appearances in that season’s World Junior Championships.

The following season GB Head Coach – now Lightning Head Coach – Pete Russell gave Forbes his debut at U20 level. In his second WJC campaign with the U20s, Alex played in every match scoring three assists – contributing to the team’s promotion.

For the last three campaigns Alex has played in the colours of Ogden Mustangs and, in the season just ended, scored an impressive 61 points in 49 matches (27 goals and 34 assists) – captaining the side to the league championship.

Head Coach Pete Russell commented on the club’s newest signing, saying:  “Alex has good size, good strength, is a powerful skater and keeps the game simple and direct.

“He’s been developing in North America for the last six years in the Ontario Hockey Academy and Ogden Mustangs programs. I have had Alex in my junior GB national team and know exactly what he can bring. He is an honest, hard working player, knows his role and is a ‘team first’ guy. He will fit really well into our group, add depth and create youthful competition.

“I’m looking forward to working with Alex again and we will do all we can, on and off the ice, to help him continue to develop his game further.

Alex Forbes said, “I am really excited to be joining the Lightning in their first season in the Elite League. I’ve heard nothing but positive thoughts about how the club treats the players and fans.

“I couldn’t think of a better club to start my professional career at. I can’t wait to get on the ice to play for the team and the best fans in the league!
