MK beat the competition to ink Isackson

The latest addition to the roster for the Smith Recycling MK Lightning is confirmed today as former NHL draft pick Christian Isackson who moves from French league champions Gap – where he played alongside two other MKL signings, Kyle Essery and Kevin King.

Hailing from Minnesota in the US, 25 year old Christian can play either in the centre or on the right wing, and his talent saw him drafted in round 7 of the 2010 pick by Buffalo Sabres.

Like Ben Foster, Christian spent four seasons playing in the tough NCAA league in the United States, during his studies at the University of Minnesota, helping them to win the regular season championships for two consecutive seasons. After graduating he remained in the US, adding to his experience with Colorado Eagles and Wichita Thunder of the ECHL.

Then in 2016 came his first experience of the European game, when he signed for two-time French league champions Gap – helping them to a third title as one of the 31 man team’s top 10 scorers.

Lightning’s Head Coach, Pete Russell, said he was delighted to have signed the sought-after forward, seeing off stiff competition:

“I’m delighted to have secured Christian as there was a lot of interest in him around mainland Europe.

“Christian is strong, is a good skater, really good hands, can score and plays both ways. He uses his body well and is strong along the walls. Competes hard and has good work ethic. I really like his overall game. During the second half of last season in France, he really came into his own. He really found another level in his game and was a big, big player for Gap. During the play-off run he was among the top five overall point scorers in the country.

“Christian can play in all situations and can really make a difference. He is another very exciting addition and adds another dimension to our line up – I’m absolutely delighted to welcome him to the Lightning!”

Christian Isackson said how much he’s looking forward to pulling on the Lightning jersey, saying:

“This is going to be a great year! I can’t wait to be a part of this club and making some noise as we begin our first year in the top flight in the UK – I’m very excited to be joining and look forward to meeting everyone next month!”
