Lightning aim for continuing home success this Saturday
Speed will be of the essence this Saturday night when the Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning host embattled Nottingham Panthers (7pm Saturday 2 March, Planet Ice Arena).
Player Coach Tim Wallace says his team will have to be quick off the mark to cope with the visiting Panthers, but that the confidence gained from their recent upturn in form will hopefully help.
Rick Strachan’s Panthers have lost 7 of their last 8 road games - and Lightning will aim to compound their visitors’ misery at Planet Ice on Saturday evening.
“We need to skate and use our speed from the first drop of the puck on Saturday,” said Coach Wallace. The American acknowledged that the task ahead of them wouldn’t be easy, however. “They have a big strong team with some skilled forwards. But if we play a fast, structured game then that will give us the best possible chance for two more points.”
Saturday’s game comes just 24 hours after Lightning play north of the border, facing Fife Flyers on Friday evening at Fife Ice Arena. Last time MKL played there on 2nd January it was the narrowest of losses for the visitors with a 4-3 score, Fife breaking MKL hearts by scoring the winner just 39 seconds from the final buzzer - but since then the Flyers have lost 4 from their last 7 games on home ice, most recently at the hands of Belfast Giants in a game televised live on Free Sports TV.
“If we can play the majority of Friday’s game in the offensive zone that should give us a good chance of a win,” Tim Wallace commented. “We need to get the puck out of our zone as fast as possible and keep it moving north.
“We’ve had a great week of practice and hopefully gained some confidence from our last game. We want more of the same this Saturday!”
