Preview: MK Lightning v Dundee Stars (Sat 9th Feb, 7.00pm)
By Paul Brookman
Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning will be aiming to shoot down Stars when Dundee visit Planet Ice on Saturday – and at the same time they will be hoping to put an end to their losing streak.
Lightning’s last win was at Dundee on January 3. Since then Stars who added Polish centre Oliver Paczkowski to their ranks a couple of weeks ago have enjoyed mixed fortunes. On Sunday they lost out 5-4 to Guildford Flames – that result following a 5-4 defeat in overtime at Coventry Blaze the previous weekend.
Those setbacks saw Stars slip out of the play-off places after a good run of wins including a 3-1 victory against Manchester Storm after beating Guildford 2-1 in overtime and seeing off Nottingham Panthers 5-4.
Like Lightning the Dundee outfit have had trouble scoring goals – they have lit the lamp just 20 more times than MK this year with 122 goals to their credit. The difference is that they have conceded 146 times to Lightning’s 168 to ensure they stay two places ahead of our team.
Top scorer is Francois Bouchard who, with 14 goals and 21 assists for 35 points only ranks 38th in the Elite League standings, seven places behind Tim Wallace who has 38 points (13 goals and 25 assists).
Brian Hart (16+18) with a total 34 points and Charles Corcoran (11+23) also for 34 are just ahead of Andreas Valdix with the same number of points but who has only netted seven times with the rest of his total coming from assists. Former Lightning favourite Jordan Cownie has eight goals and 13 assists to his credit.
On paper this is a game that Lightning can win although they will be missing Georgs Golovkovs who has been invited to take part in the Latvian Ice Hockey Federation training camp. Fortunately he will miss only one game as MK are without a fixture on Sunday.
Saturday’s game faces off at the usual time of 7pm. Tickets are available by visiting mk-lightning.co.uk/tickets. Alternatively buy your tickets on the door or in advance at Planet Ice. Call us on 01908 540020.
