Preview: MK Lightning v Glasgow Clan (24th January)

By Paul Brookman

Glasgow Clan meet Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning for the fifth time this season at Planet Ice on Thursday with the hosts keen to go some to evening up the series so far.

The last time Clan – coached by former MK chief, Peter Russell, visited the city in November they went away with a 6-1 defeat ringing in their ears. The result came just hours after Ryan Lannon and Tim Wallace were put in charge of the squad following the departure of Doug McKay.

However when the sides lined up at Braehead Arena later that month it was Russell’s men who earned the points in a 6-3 victory, Clan also having won the encounter there in October 6-4.

Clan added former Lightning forward Guillaume Doucet to their ranks just before Christmas – joining from Alps Hockey League side Milano Rossoblu where another former team-mate Francis Verrault-Paul now tops the point scoring.

Glasgow also ran out 8-3 victors against MK at Braehead a couple of weeks ago when Doucet had an assist on the final goal. Clan have won four of their last six games, allowing them to creep up the league table to fifth spot – a pair of wins against Dundee Stars following defeats against Cardiff Devils and Coventry Blaze.

Their top scorer is former Manchester Storm player Matt Beca with 19 goals and 30 assists for 49 points, putting him fourth overall in the Elite competition while Brendan Connolly ranks ninth with 24 strikes and 22 helpers for 46 points.

A further worthwhile contribution comes from Scott Pitt, another ex-Storm man, who returned this season after having spent three terms with Clan when known as Braehead. He has 41 points – 17 goals and 24 points.
