Unlocking the Devils’ defence will be the key to another win says Wallace
The Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning are about to begin a gruelling festive schedule straddling Christmas, starting with formidable opposition in the form of the Cardiff Devils (Thursday 20 Dec, 7.30pm Planet Ice MK Arena).
The match will be the first of SIX competitive fixtures in just nine days. And whilst many of the team’s supporters will enjoy a little traditional Christmas over-indulgence, the Lightning squad will moderate their intake of festive fare to ensure there are no sluggish starts in their games.
Lightning and Devils faced each other twice in November: at Planet Ice it was Andrew Lord’s side who took the points but at Ice Arena Wales later that month, newly-appointed Player-Coaches Tim Wallace and Ryan Lannon led their team to a morale-boosting overtime win.
With MKL having won 5 of their last 6 home games and Cardiff winning the same proportion of road games, Tim Wallace knows tomorrow’s game in MK - the last before Christmas Day - will be one they have to work hard to win.
“It’s always tough against the Devils,” he said. “They’re a tremendously experienced group and are one of the top teams in the league. They have some big, strong defence men who won’t make it easy for us.”
A veteran of more than 100 games in the NHL, Wallace continued “We need to get to the net and go to the hard areas. We’ve played well at home recently and obviously we want to continue in the same direction!”
Thursday’s game is the last chance for supporters to catch the team in action until Boxing Day. Tickets will remain on sale right through until the game starts at 7.30pm at the Planet Ice MK Arena, adjacent to Morrison’s at the Leisure Plaza.
