Preview: MK Lightning V Cardiff Devils (10th Nov)

Highly-rated Cardiff Devils make their second visit in a month to Planet Ice on Saturday when Smith Recycling Milton Keynes Lightning will be keen to gain some revenge on the Welsh side.

Lightning came back from 4-0 down to run Devils close in a 5-4 loss when the two sides last met in the Challenge Cup on October 14. Now it’s onto league action in what will be a tough but entertaining encounter.

Devils suffered two defeats at the weekend when they went down 6-4 to Coventry Blaze at Ice Arena Wales before losing 3-2 at Nottingham Panthers on Sunday – results which slightly dent their league title aspirations.

They are due to meet Fife Flyers at home today (Wednesday) when a win would see them gain ground on the leading pack – Cardiff go into that game in fourth place on 18pts but have five games in hand on table topping Belfast Giants with 26pts.

Strength in depth is Cardiff’s watchword. Look at the top ten Elite League scorers standings and there’s not a single Devils player. The top scorer is Charles Linglet on 17 points in 16th place, while Matt Pope, Gleason Fournier and Joey Martin feature in the top 30, ahead of MK’s Tim Wallace.

Sean Bentivoglio, Joey Haddad and Mike Hedden figure in the next ten spots – trailing Andreas Valdix.

For a coach that makes it difficult to try to close down one or two top marksmen because another will probably pop up with the goals.

There’s no doubting the quality of the Devils squad with no less than 13 having experienced playing in North America’s ECHL or AHL.

Ahead of Devils’ visit Lightning go to Altrincham on Friday to meet Manchester Storm who lost 3-0 to Nottingham Panthers on Friday before edging out Fife Flyers 3-2 on Saturday.
